After this period, he returned to his family and was enrolled in Ranbir Government High School. It was here that the first seeds of his poetic journey were sown. After successfully passing his 10th examinations, he moved on to Jammu College for higher studies. However, due to circumstances, he couldn’t complete his formal education.

The Genesis of His Poetry

Arsh Sehbai’s love for poetry was evident from childhood. His initial mentorship came from a teacher named Abdullah at the Government Ranbir High School. However, his formal entry into the world of poetry was marked in 1951 when he publicly recited one of his ghazals at a poetic gathering (mushaira) in Pathankot.

He was also a student of the famous Urdu poet Malsyani, who guided and corrected his work for a long time. This rigorous training helped him master his craft.

The Hallmark of Arsh Sehbai’s Ghazals

While Arsh Sehbai experimented with many genres of Urdu literature, his heart truly belonged to the ghazal. For students studying Arsh Sehbai Urdu Ghazal Poetry Tashreeh for Class 10th, the most striking feature will be the clarity and fluency of his language.

Simplicity is the essence of his words. He had the rare ability to express deep philosophical ideas and complex emotions in a straightforward manner that anyone could understand. His ghazals are not just beautiful; they are full of effectiveness, leaving a lasting impact on the reader.

His notable published collections include “Gul” and “Cross.” His work “Shagufta-e-Gul” (also mentioned as Shagufta Gul) was widely appreciated and even received an award from the Cultural Academy.

A Glimpse into His Thought Process

One of the most profound questions his poetry raises is about social divisions, such as caste. When asked why a person cannot escape the “siege of caste,” Arsh Sehbai provided a powerful analogy.

He explained that human existence is like a house. A house has walls on all four sides, trapping what is inside. Similarly, the human body acts as a prison for the soul, and like a house without a door, it has no apparent way to break free from the societal constructs it is born into. This simple yet deep explanation is a perfect example of his intellectual depth.

His Legacy and Contributions

Arsh Sehbai’s contributions to Urdu literature are immense. His most memorable poetry collections include Sakshat Jam, Shagufta Gul, and Salib. For his work on Shagufta Gul, he was honored with an award by the State Cultural Academy.

Beyond poetry, he was also a skilled writer of memoirs. His works like Anjum Kadha provide invaluable insights into the lives and literary services of various Urdu poets from different eras, preserving their history for future generations.

Initially, his poetry followed a traditional path, but as times changed, he adapted and began covering modern issues, making his work relevant across generations.

Remembering the Maestro

Sadly, this great figure left us on December 26, 2020. However, his words remain immortal. Arsh Sehbai’s contributions to the world of Urdu ghazals will forever be cherished by literature lovers not just in India, but across the border in Pakistan as well.
