Important Sunnahs of Eid ul Fitr: A Guide to Celebrating the Right Way

Eid ul Fitr, the festival marking the end of Ramadan, is a time of joy, gratitude, and communal harmony. While celebrations vary across cultures, Muslims are encouraged to follow the Sunnah (traditions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) to make the most of this blessed day.

Here are the key Sunnahs of Eid ul Fitr that every Muslim should observe:

1. Waking Up Early and Performing Ghusl (Ritual Bath)

– The Prophet ﷺ would wake up early on Eid day.

– Taking a ghusl (purificatory bath) before going for Eid prayers is recommended, as it signifies cleanliness and preparation for worship.

– Using perfume is also recommended for men.

3. Eating Dates Before Eid Prayer (Odd Number)

– The Prophet ﷺ would eat an odd number of dates (usually 3 or 5) before leaving for Eid prayers.

– This Sunnah signifies breaking the Ramadan fast and preparing for the Eid Salah.

4. Going to the Eid Prayer Ground (Eidgah) on Foot

– Walking to the Eidgah (prayer ground).is a Sunnah, as it increases rewards and promotes humility.

– If the mosque is far, using transport is permissible.

5. Reciting Takbeer on the Way to Eid Prayer

– From the night of Eid until the Imam begins the prayer, Muslims should recite the Takbeer:

  – “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd.”

  – This glorifies Allah and sets a spiritual tone for the day.

6. Offering Eid Prayer in an Open Space (If Possible)

Sunnahs of Eid ul Fitr

– The Prophet ﷺ preferred praying Eid Salah in an open field (Eidgah) rather than inside a mosque (unless weather conditions prevent it).

– The prayer consists of two rak’ahs with extra Takbeers.

7. Giving Zakat al-Fitr Before Eid Prayer

– Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrah) is obligatory and must be given before the Eid prayer to purify fasting and help the needy.

– It is typically given in the form of staple food (wheat, barley, dates) or its monetary equivalent.

8. Exchanging Greetings and Spreading Joy

– Muslims should greet each other with:

  – “Eid Mubarak!” or “Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum” (May Allah accept it from us and you).

– The Prophet ﷺ encouraged strengthening family bonds and visiting relatives.

9. Taking a Different Route Returning Home

– The Prophet ﷺ would take one path to the Eid prayer and a different route back home.

– Scholars suggest this Sunnah allows more people to receive blessings and greetings.

10. Engaging in Charity and Feasting (Without Extravagance)

– Eid is a day of moderate celebration—enjoying halal food, sharing meals, and giving to the poor.

– The Prophet ﷺ emphasized avoiding wastefulness while celebrating.

Conclusion: Reviving the Sunnahs for a Blessed Eid

Following these Sunnahs ensures that Eid ul Fitr is celebrated in a way that pleases Allah and maintains the spirit of Islam. By reviving the Sunnahs of Eid ul Fitr, Muslims can connect with the Prophet’s ﷺ teachings and make their Eid more meaningful.
